![]() The vastly more important issue is the matter of world order. Nye discusses Russia's war against Ukraine from the perspective of national interest of the U.S., Russia and other actors in this senseless. Little nations and little citizens watch and remember things like that. ![]() 2020 (Time magazine covered) never mentioned in the election contest by the Dems. ![]() As cynical as the US elite not giving its citizens national health insurance despite the greatest transfer of wealth in human history, $53 trillion upward to the top 10% between 1976-2018, according to the RAND study from Sept. ![]() So is it "realism" or crippling cynicism that we, the US helped lead Ukraine out of the Russian orbit, but would not deter the invasion meaning the Ukrainians paid all the price of dead and destruction of its cities. No comment Professor Nye on Biden's performance? And no one stating that the US, Britain, France and Poland might have sent even token ground forces in Dec-Jan to key positions inside Ukraine but not on the Russian border as a deterrent to any invasion at all? Which was my position. The cruelty it seems to me is for the US to have been watching, as the whole world did, the build-up of some 150,000 Russian troops on Ukraine's border for months, over six months actually, and then do nothing except Biden saying we would not send troops or sent air ldly announcing though that Russia would invade, Biden also bizarrely stating he hoped Putin didn't take too big a slice - that would be ok. But being only important, we spent a lot of time behind the scenes in a way yet to be revealed except so far with some diplomatic tapes showing that the struggle was well under way between Russia and the US to pull the Ukraine into their respective power orbits, a less intense, for the time, Civil War that mimics that of the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1938 between democratic nations and Fascist nations. Well, I guess there is a lesson in cynicism here too which Professor Nye glides over so easily: that Ukraine is a vital/existential issue for Russia (echoing Professor Mearsheimer - remember him?) but only an important interest for the US. ![]()
